How conversations work

Exchange messages with users programmatically, grouped into tracked conversations.

You enable 2-way messaging for a sender during onboarding. Once enabled, you can programmatically exchange messages with users, and each message belongs to a conversation.

What defines a conversation

  • A unique identifier.
  • Its origin: started by the business or by the user.
  • A 24-hour conversation window. It starts when the first business message is delivered to the user (business-initiated) or when the first user message is delivered to the business (user-initiated).
  • A billing type, set by the origin and by whether the other side responded.

One at a time

Only one conversation can be active between a given sender and a user at any time.
